Things to Do in Woking

Waiting for your car to be fixed, or visiting Woking for the day? Here are some local places worth a look. Opening times change through the year, so check with each venue before you set off.

The Lightbox

Woking’s gallery and museum by the Basingstoke Canal, with changing art exhibitions and a gallery about the town’s history.

Horsell Common and The Martian

H.G. Wells set the Martian landing in The War of the Worlds on Horsell Common, now a large heath with woodland walks. A giant Martian tripod sculpture stands in the town centre.

The Basingstoke Canal

The towpath runs right through Woking and out towards Byfleet and the countryside, and it’s flat and easy for walking or cycling.

New Victoria Theatre

The town-centre theatre hosts touring musicals, comedy, music and a pantomime at Christmas.

The Shah Jahan Mosque

Built in 1889, it was the first purpose-built mosque in Britain and is a listed building in Oriental Road.

Brooklands Museum

At Weybridge, on the site of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, with cars, motorcycles and aircraft. A good stop for anyone who likes cars.

Further afield

RHS Garden Wisley is a short drive east, Thorpe Park is near Chertsey, and Runnymede, where Magna Carta was sealed, is by the Thames at Egham.
